There are a few things I do every day for optimal health and performance. This includes taking carefully selected supplements.
These are the supplements I take every day. I am sure you will have questions about this post. Feel free to ask them here.
Vitamin C
“The physician should give the patient vitamin C while they ponder the diagnosis.”
— Frederick Klenner, MD
This is why the vitamin C protocol is (almost always) the first protocol we share with patients.
Why is vitamin C so important?
Vitamin C creates cross-links between collagen. Collagen is your main structural protein. Think of collagen as the bricks or cinder blocks that constitute a building. Collagen without cross-links is like bricks or cinder blocks without mortar. Without vitamin C, you fall apart.
Vitamin C gives your immune system the power to knock out invading pathogens, defective or cancerous cells, and to repair damaged cells and tissues. Without it, you cannot defend yourself or repair your tissues.
Vitamin C is needed for the creation of hormones and neurotransmitters that are vital to life. Many of these hormones and neurotransmitters control our immune response.
In my clinical observation, patients often report positive changes when using our vitamin C. Results vary by individual. This is why I take vitamin C every day.

Choline Citrate
I pair vitamin C with choline citrate, which assists with absorption of magnesium and correction of metabolic acidosis within cells (a widespread problem).
Based on my clinical observations, I believe many people today may have difficulty optimizing their magnesium status due to inadequate choline intake.
Choline is a precursor to acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is the neurotransmitter of our parasympathetic nervous systems, which is the part of our nervous system that allows us to relax, regenerate, and rejuvenate. Acetylcholine is also the main neurotransmitter of memory.
Without choline, our memories deteriorate and our nervous systems go into overdrive. With adequate choline, we can enter rest and digest mode to recover from exercise, injury, and illness, and achieve optimal brain function and cognition. Our diets are tragically deficient in choline today due to modern food processing. This is why I take choline as a supplement. I am also convinced that it is a cognitive performance enhancer, and I want all the brain-power I can get.
Citrate helps to alkalinize the body. As we age, our bodies tend to become more acidic. We need to alkalinize to maintain optimal health and vitality (there are some people who are too alkaline and actually need more acid, but they are the minority). We measure acidity and alkalinity as “pH.” Your morning urinary pH is one of the predictors of early mortality. The lower it is (the more acidic you are), the higher your risk of death. You can easily measure this with pH paper. Optimal is approximately 7.0. Choline citrate is one of the things that keeps me at 7.0. Another benefit of our vitamin C is that it helps to correct pH, because it is correctly buffered. Most vitamin C available to consumers will drop their pH and can actually make them worse.
I love the flavor of choline citrate with vitamin C and SkinSips. They are the perfect combination of tart and sweet.

You can check your urinary pH using these strips.
SkinSips
I add SkinSips to choline citrate and vitamin C to give it lemon flavor and a touch of sweetness. SkinSips is a powerful antioxidant and pairs well with vitamin C. Listen to my podcast with founder Mary Rankin here:
SkinSips contains an enzyme called superoxide dismutase, which helps to neutralize free radicals. Some patients report experiencing more energy, better hair, skin, and nails, and improved mental clarity with SkinSips.
We don’t have SkinSips in our store yet, but we will soon. For now, you can pick it up here.

Digestive Bitters
Did you know bitters are more than just flavors for cocktails? Bitters are added to cocktails to stimulate digestion. They can have a surprisingly powerful impact on those with a tender digestive system. I use them personally and often discuss them with patients who have digestive concerns.
Before you get too excited, I am not recommending cocktails as “healthy.” I drink bitters in soda water prior to meals to stimulate my digestion. I drink bitters and soda or bitters and plain water daily.

LifeGuard
I strongly recommend testing for nutritional status and supplementing based on the results, but there are times when life gets in the way. There are also acute scenarios where testing isn’t practical (acute injuries, illnesses, and more). During stressful periods in my own life, my wife and I don’t take the time to personalize our own supplements. The last year has been very challenging for us, and when we didn’t have time for personalized supplement protocols, we took LifeGuard.
LifeGuard is a multi-vitamin and multi-mineral. Most “multis” are a waste of money. They use poor quality ingredients and production methods that leave you with an inconsistent or even unsafe product. This is the only mineral and vitamin supplement I trust aside from supplements that we personalize for patients in our practice.
This product is everything I could want in a multi. Having analyzed thousands of labs over the years of my practice, I believe most people can benefit from the nutrients in this product. Even the doses and ratios of different nutrients are dialed in. Naturally, some people need a different mix of nutrients, but if you don’t have personalized testing, this is what I personally use during busy periods.
LifeGuard is a complete multi-vitamin and multi-mineral. It replaces B-complex, trace elements like zinc, manganese, selenium, and more. It contains nutrients that I believe are important for supporting nutrition in our modern world. We use higher doses of select supplements in the practice based on lab testing, but if lab testing and personalized supplements are not an option for you, then LifeGuard is what I personally use during busy periods.

EPA/DHA (Fish Oil)
Controversy abounds regarding fish oil. Some say, “don’t take it.” Others say, “you absolutely must take it.” Here is why I take it. Research suggests fish oil may support brain health and cognitive function. Some studies have associated fish oil consumption with cognitive benefits. We give our son two capsules of this product daily (he is 9 months old as of this writing).
I could eat fish instead of taking fish oil. Sadly, all of the fish in Florida are contaminated with mercury. Rather than buying fish from elsewhere, I prefer to take fish oil. You might prefer to eat fish. Pick one and make it happen.
I take fish oil because I am driven to have a positive impact on the world, and I do that with my brain. If I were a surgeon who relied on his hands instead of his brain, I might not take fish oil (just kidding, surgeons need their brains too).

Iodine
Iodine is one of my favorite supplements. Iodoral is a special combination of two forms of iodine, both of which we need for optimal health. I have been taking 50 mg daily for years now. I take iodoral alone or with cooked food, as antioxidants like vitamin C change the chemical structure of the iodine in Iodoral.
