Iodine is incredible. The average American might get 100 mcg per day, if they're lucky. Smart Americans who eat seafood might get a few hundred micrograms.
To me, that's not enough. The Japanese consume milligrams of iodine each day and their risks of cancer, heart disease, and thyroid disorders are extremely low. This is why consuming seaweed is essential to health, in my opinion.
That’s why I like to cook with seaweed powders from Mountain Rose Herbs. Add a teaspoon or a tablespoon of kombu powder to soups and stews to make them more savory.
But a few milligrams of iodine sometimes isn't enough.
If you read Dr. David Brownstein's book on iodine, you'll find that he uses 50 mg doses. Fifty milligrams is an extremely high dose, difficult to achieve even with seaweed.
But it gets amazing results in some cases, and is well-tolerated generally, so I use it on a regular basis in my practice.
All of that being said, consult a practitioner before trying high-dose iodine.
When do I use high dose iodine?
Are you...
Tired?
Hungry all the time?
Constipated?
Depressed?
Unable to focus (ADHD)?
Losing your hair?
Struggling with dry skin?
Hypertensive (high blood pressure)?
Gaining weight or struggling to lose weight?
Are you just not feeling all that great?
If any of these features are present, I will try high-dose iodine.
But iodine is a sledgehammer in terms of its effects on your metabolism. Mostly, this is a good thing. It gets your metabolism back on track.
However, sometimes it causes adverse symptoms and we have to watch the dose.
That rarely happens. People who have thyroid illnesses can react to iodine, because it can significantly increase the concentrations of thyroid hormone. It might particularly worsen hyperthyroidism, which by definition are diseases of elevated thyroid hormone levels. I have a whole course on healing thyroid disorders that you can learn more about here.
