I get this question a lot.
First, how do I define a cold?
I call anything manifesting with some combination of sore throat, cough, runny nose, or nasal congestion, a cold until proven otherwise.
Chest pain, shortness of breath, or severe pain are all red flag symptoms when it comes to acute illnesses. I have a low threshold to send patients with these complaints to an urgent care or ER, because of what can be missed in these situations. Many people mistake their first heart attack, blood clot, or cancer for a "cold" or "flu." I wouldn't want that on my conscience.
So what do I do for an uncomplicated, straight-forward cold?
