Benjamin is getting better day by day in all respects. We just need him to nurse, so that we can get rid of his nasogastric tube. Thank you all for the support you’ve given us in replies to these emails, in the comments below, and more. Thank you for your continued prayers for Benjamin, who we’re excited to bring home soon.
As soon as I recovered from the initial shock of Benjamin's hospitalization, I called all of my friends and colleagues who I thought might have useful advice on how to help him recover.
This list included, in no particular order:
Dr. Brad Weeks
Dr. Jason Sonners
Dr. Scott Sherr
Dr. Lee Cowden
Dr. Derek Guillory
Dr. Larry Palevsky
Dr. Jana Schmidt
Dr. Russell Jaffe
Marsha Lessard
Ben Greenfield
There's probably a few centuries of collective experience between these folks.
Here's what they recommended.
Jason Sonners and Scott Sherr both recommended hyperbaric oxygen.
Lee Cowden recommended lumbrokinase, Ecklonia cava, fat-soluble antioxidants/anthocyanidins/polyphenols (lutein, zeaxanthein, xanthein, astaxanthin), vitamin E, and fish oil.
Larry Palevsky recommended magnesium threonate (50 mg) and fish oil (120 mg DHA per 10 pounds of body weight).
Multiple people recommended fish oil (Larry was the only one with dosing guidelines for a neonate, but then again, he is the only pediatrician I surveyed). Everyone else recommended fish oil for mom (as much as 6-8 grams per day).
Russell Jaffe recommended his Potent C Guard, Repair Guard, LifeGuard, Magnesium Plus Guard, and Choline Citrate. More on these later.
Ben Greenfield recommended PEMF.
Derek Guillory recommended cerebrolysin, BPC-157, and plasmalogens.
Marsha Lessard recommended something called Quantum Reflex Integration.
We are, of course, going to patch him with all of the LifeWave patches. We've started with the X39, X49, and Aeon. Try them - they are amazing. Start with the X39.
We're working through this list of interventions and therapies. It's a lot of ground to cover. The hyperbaric oxygen tank arrived this week. I just purchased a PEMF mat.
Why am I telling you all of this?
Lack of oxygen to the brain (Benjamin's injury) has a great deal in common with many of the other common illnesses of the brain and nervous system that are on the rise.
In fact, we may view every disease of the body as a lack of oxygen at the tissue level. This is why virtually all diseases improve when you use oxidative therapies. More on these in a future post...
Most of the people I surveyed above haven't treated neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (the formal diagnosis Benjamin is being treated for) much, if at all. However, because the mechanism is the same for these diseases, it stands to reason that these interventions will all work for Benjamin's recovery.
If you came to me with:
Neurodegenerative disease (dementia, cognitive decline, etc.)
Traumatic brain injury
Post-traumatic stress disorder
Depression or anxiety
Stroke
Spinal cord injury
Neuropathy (of practically any kind)
Multiple sclerosis or any other autoimmune neurological illness
I would most likely recommend the interventions above. This is not a therapeutic recommendation for you - there are reasons to avoid any and all of the above. An important example would be fish oil, which we avoided for a few days initially with Benjamin. His hypoxia was severe enough that he had low platelet counts and would not stop bleeding from his IV lines. They actually had to transfuse him with fresh frozen plasma and cryoprecipitate to get him to stop bleeding. We are fortunate that he did not bleed into his brain (as if the poor little guy didn't have enough to deal with already!). Thankfully, his platelet counts normalized after a week or so and he isn't bleeding spontaneously anymore.
My hope is that those of you with loved ones who are struggling with the above diagnoses will be able to help them with this information. The links above are all affiliate links - your purchases help us to pioneer natural and holistic treatment for Benjamin and others, which I'll be sharing with you as we work through Benjamin's case.
Until next time, be well,
Dr. Stillman
Thank you everyone for your support and suggestions. Leland and my daughter are already amazing parents to Benjamin. Leland is doing research everyday and listening to all suggestions. Pray for their health and peace of mind. Their spiritual prayers are being lifted up each day, as well as ours for this beautiful child. Thank God for our family, friends and our church for all of the wonderful support for the Healing Story of Baby Benjamin. Praying all of this as Benjamin's Grandmother, Mimi. :-)
I would read The Forgotten Side of Medicine on DMSO and how it helps brain injuries. Praying for all.
